Yamaha grand and upright
pianos are constructed using
high-grade acoustic tonewoods
like Sitka and Japanese
spruce, cast iron for the
structural plates,
high-tensile steel and copper
for the strings, and premium
wool felt and leather for the
action mechanics.
Wood and Tonewoods
- Spruce: Sitka and Japanese
spruce are used for
soundboards and keybeds due
to high vibration resonance
and resistance to warping.
- Hardwoods (Maple, Birch,
Beech): Used for grand piano
rims, pinblocks, and
structural framing
components to handle massive
stress.
- Mahogany and Walnut:
Utilized selectively in
action parts and hammers for
an ideal strength-to-weight
acceleration ratio.
Metals and Alloys
- Cast Iron: Vacuum-cast or
sand-cast iron plates bear
over 20 to 22.5 tons of
string tension.
- Steel and Copper:
High-carbon steel wire is
used for treble and
mid-range strings, while
bass strings are wound with
solid copper.
- Brass and Nickel/Lead:
Used for tuning pins,
agraffes, pedals, and
strategic weighting inside
the wooden keys.
Action, Felts, and
Finishes
- Wool Felt and Leather:
Pure wool felt wraps the
hammer heads and cushions
key beds, backchecks, and
rails to control tone and
mechanical noise.
- Artificial Ivory and
Acrylic: Synthetic composite
materials cover the natural
wood core of the white and
black keys.
- Polyester and
Polyurethane: Durable,
high-gloss or satin chemical
finishes coat the outer
casework.
